painting off the walls (2022)
Transitioning off traditional painting on canvases, I took my past ideas of abstract forms and organic shapes and tried to create them out of wood instead. Painting on a canvas wasn't enough for me anymore, and the layering effect wasn't giving me the satisfaction I wanted. Taking my paintings to the next level, I used basswood boards to cut the organic shapes, stacked and intertwined them to create my sculptural pieces and played around with shadow projection. I first cut the pieces by hand but eventually used a laser cutter. Not only do I paint onto the wood boards, but I also paint onto the back, so when light is cast onto the piece, the piece reflects the shadows and the color painted on the backside.
